Here's Why You’re Losing Customers (and What To Do About it)

Most businesses don't lose customers all at once. They just kind of slink away quietly in the space between the sale and the follow-up that never comes.
But it doesn't have to be that way. Here's a quick gut check right out of my new book, The Small Business Growth Blueprint: How to Grow Your Business and Turn Customers Into Lifelong Fans, the newest addition to my small business startup collection.
Run through these five and be honest with yourself. If any of them hit close to home, that's your starting point.
Buyers don't know what happens next. When customers buy from you, they need a clear picture of what comes after. Uncertainty kills confidence fast.
Try this: Map out your post-purchase sequence and make sure every customer receives it automatically.
The relationship goes silent after the sale closes. Customers notice when you only show up when you want something.
Do this: Schedule one meaningful touchpoint within 48 hours of every transaction, no pitch required.
When something goes wrong, they can't find you. If customers have to hunt for a phone number or email, you’re already moving into the “danger” zone.
Action step: Put your contact information in every order confirmation, receipt and follow-up message you send.
Customer service problems drag on for too long. Buyers don't expect perfection, but they do want a fast, honest response when something goes sideways.
Try this: Set a personal response-time standard for complaints and hold yourself and your team members to it.
You're not paying attention to the ones who disappeared. Churn doesn't happen all at once. If you're not watching, you'll miss it entirely.
Do this: Pull a simple report monthly on customers who haven't purchased in 60 to 90 days and get going on some personal outreach.
None of these things are hard to do, but even incremental steps can help you reduce customer churn and build loyalty that turns a one-time buyer into a repeat customer.
