3 Signs You’re Ready to Build Something of Your Own

Most people don’t start a business because they have a grand plan and a sure route to success. They start because they’ve hit their limit: the paycheck, the boss, the bureaucracy. Frustration, it turns out, is one of the best startup fuels there is.

The fuel is so potent it’s practically an economic engine. Just look at what it’s set in motion:

  • About 5.5 million new small businesses launch in the U.S. every year.

  • Those small companies make up 99.9% of all firms nationwide (and employ nearly half of the private workforce).

  • And, they’ve created more than 62% of net new jobs in the U.S. since 1995.

Obviously small business isn’t a side hustle story; it’s the backbone of the economy, built by millions of people who bet on themselves. If that sounds like you, here are three reasons to join them:

1) Take control of your income and career path. Plenty of skilled professionals spend years waiting for a raise that never comes or a promotion that keeps getting delayed. Eventually, they realize the fastest way up is out. If this sounds all too familiar, list three ways you could earn money on your own skills within the next 30 days.

2) Stop waiting for someone else’s approval. If you’ve ever watched a great idea die in a meeting, you know the feeling. But if that idea keeps coming back it’s a signal, not a distraction. Try picking one idea you’ve been sitting on and take a small step to test it this week.

3) Recognize opportunity where others see risk. I know a talented carpenter who spent his whole life working for someone else because (and I quote) he “didn’t want to deal with the tax paperwork.” Don’t be that guy. Instead, identify an emerging trend in your field and brainstorm how it could become a product, service or niche.
